Microsoft: Blu-Ray not coming to Xbox 360

Digital distribution is the future, the iPod and iTunes have taught us that, however, gaming still has few more years to go in the physical realm. Microsoft knows this but they don't want to concede yet to Sony for any new formats before it all becomes obsolete anyway.

"We have no plans to adopt [a] Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360. In fact, the future of home entertainment started last autumn when Xbox 360 became the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies."

Stephen McGill - Director of Xbox and Entertainment, Microsoft

And if it's anyone who knows anything about obsolete it's Sony: BetaMax, MiniDisc, UMD, you name it. But kidding aside, do gamers REALLY care if you have to disc swap? People in my day thought it was cool when you had to pop in Final Fantasy 7's third disc, or Metal Gear Solid's second disc. And does it really cost publishers THAT much money to fit all the content onto two discs? Yeah, I know it's bad for the environment, but I doubt Steve Ballmer cares about that when it comes between him and his precious green.

Final Fantasy XIII's Graphics Comparison - Xbox 360 vs. PS3

The Rebels and the Imperialists, the Losties and the Others, Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario; All of these are but the quarrels of small children in a sandbox when compared to the never-ending struggle between the fanboys of the Xbox 360 and PS3 camps. Why bring this up now? Well, whether you're aware of it or not, today marks the day when the long awaited RPG, Final Fantasy XIII, hits North American shores on both Microsoft's and Sony's gaming consoles.

Final Fantasy has long since been a series exclusive to Sony but Square Enix finally decided to go multi-platform with its newest title and is giving Western gamers an option on which version they'd like to nab. Y'know, a "nothing personal - just business" kinda thing. I'll be grabbing it for the PStriple but I thought it'd be sweet to take a look at some screenshot comparisons done between the two versions, which are minimal despite what fanboys may be saying.

Rumor: Sony Playstation Phone coming in 2010?

BoyGeniusReport is throwing out a Wallstreet Journal rumor that Sony is making some sort of conflabbit contraption that wants to compete directly with not only the iPhone, but also the Windows 7 phone series, and the upcoming iPad.

Ok - what?!

Does Sony really think they have what it takes to craft something so well it can go up against not only Microsoft but also Apple?

Are they going to be counting on their line up of old PS1 games to make their rumored device a must own? I seriously don't know what Sony has up their sleeve but I think they have one hand too many in a number of cookie jars; Focus on what exactly you want to do with the PSP and PS3 systems before you decide to make a phone out of them.

Project Pink to be heading to Verizon?

Project Pink is still being played fairly close to Microsoft’s chest; however, this week Mobile Blogs have seen several pieces of the eluding puzzle come together. Engadget having been tipped by an extremely reliable source, they were told that two Sharp-made handsets would launch exclusively on Verizon -- possibly on the 20th of April.

They’ve also got good word, that Project Pink devices will be aimed towards teens; rumours aplenty it’s been long suggested that Microsoft’s Project Pink is poised to take over the failing Sidekick market. Until launch we don’t have any more information other than Pink appears to be a limited feature phone platform (this jives with the theory of recouping the failing Sidekick market).

On an international level Pink is expected to be travelling to Vodafone, which in lieu of explains the inclusion of a possible GSM variant.

Video: Thanks Microsoft, the future of Mobile Gaming looks mind-boggling

The future of mobile gaming just got better; with that being said, Microsoft’s Eric Rudder whilst speaking at TechEd Middle East demoed a cross platform game developed by Visual Studio. Using about 90% shared code; the simple Indiana Jones platformer is playable on Windows with a keyboard, WP7S with the accelerometer and touch controls and the Xbox 360 with the gamepad. If that doesn’t impress you enough, this most certainly will. Microsoft included a rather nice feature that allows you too pick up where you left off, no matter which platform you change to.

Microsoft Courier Details - Features, Pictures, and Videos

We have been waiting for this, and now it's closer than ever - and the interwebs have gobbled up some wicked pictures and video, along with some more info. First off the Courier, which we have learned is supposed to function as a "digital journal," and it's designed to be seriously portable (less then 1 inch thick) and isn't much bigger than a 5x7 photo when closed.

Microsoft discusses Windows Phone 7 Series Development

With Microsoft keen to work closely with developers, the dominating theme at MIX’10 is bound to be Windows Phone 7 Series development. Windows Phone 7 Series Themes for WinMo handsets

With a barrage of new devices and operating systems in store for 2010, consumers can often feel overwhelmed. Forking out cold hard cash to fill your gadget addiction is all well and good, but just how practical is it? In an attempt to save money XDA-Developers Jaxbot and LeSScro have rolled their own Windows Phone 7 Series themes, available for previous Windows Mobile handsets.

Jaxbot’s skin is still fairly slow and buggy however, it does provide you with some Windows Phone 7 Series lust. It currently includes information on live tiles, and the ability to see upcoming appointments via the lock screen. The latter -- being LeSScro’s theme -- provides you with sport times, dates, notifications via the lock screen and profile information with the added bonus of transitional animations. There’s also the inclusion of hubs and an application launcher. Whilst these themes are good for the moment, come Windows Phone 7 Series’ official launch many will opt for the real deal.

Final Fantasy 13 install is 18.3GB for 360

The PS3 version of Final Fantasy 13 is being released on a single Blu-Ray disc, whereas the 360 version will come on 3 different DVD's. But if you're looking to cut down on load times and whatnot, you can do one of those new fancy full game installs on your 360 hard drive - you know the ones that the PS3 was notoriously known for, but have laid off on them recently.

Well, if you do decide to go that route you better have yourself some extra hard drive space because that installation will set you back 18.3GB's. Unfortunately for me, I happen to own one of those 20GB hard drives so I've never had the experience of installing a game, but it's no skin off my nose; I really have no issue with disc swaps. I mean, is it that big of a deal?

Editorial: You Can't Google Privacy

Gizmodo posted up a pretty interesting piece the other day about "removing yourself from under the big G's shadow" as they put it. I'm not against the idea of leaving Google or anything, but I find it interesting that people believe that leaving the company's services they'll somehow cover up private information they don't want people seeing. News flash: Google isn't the only one with access to your private information.

For instance, your every move is traced by your ISP; they know what you're doing. They know what's your favorite porn fetish, your bank of choice, where you live, and many other vital pieces of information about your individual self - though, people are either completely oblivious to this or just simply choose not to pay much attention to it. People don't like to think that big brother's looking over your shoulder, but they are - maybe not actively, but if they chose to they could, and how would you even know about it?

I'm not taking Google off the hook for their actions, what they did displaying nothing short of lack of consideration for the end user, but what I'm saying is that the some people who've vested so much into Google have started to lose sight of what exactly their relationship with them entails. They're not your friend, they're not a confidant, they're not even someone who truly cares about you. What they are is a business; a business built to make money from your continued use of their product.

The rest after the break!
